What Size Tractor Should I Get?

Size absolutely matters when it comes to purchasing a tractor.

In fact, getting the right size tractor is a vital decision. You will save money and get a tractor that is perfect for handling your workload.

No worries though, we are here to help you make the best decision.

Keep in mind --- if you buy too small of a tractor, you will feel underpowered. If you buy too big, it will be awkward to use and difficult to maneuver.

First and foremost, you need to decide what you will be using the tractor for. Will you be doing loader work? Are you going to be box blading the driveway? Other? It is important to be clear about this.

No matter what the use, we recommend buying a 4wd tractor. 4wd tractors add a couple hundred dollars to the cost and will require a little more maintenance --- but they are worth every penny. Your dealer can go into great deal with you on all the benefits of going with a 4wd over a 2wd tractor.

After you decide what type of work you will be using the tractor for, you need to decide how much of it you will be doing.

As far as horsepower, the only difference between an 18hp tractor and a 40hp tractor is how fast you can get your work completed. Both can level a driveway, mow a yard, and move a pile of dirt.

Experts recommend around 4hp for every 1' of mower and box blade. For example, a 16hp tractor will easily run a 4' mower. A 4' mower can mow 2.32 acres in 1 hour at 100% efficiency (no overlapping, no turning around). A 24hp tractor can run a 6' mower. A 6' mower can mow 3.64 acres in the same amount of time. That is over 1 football field of extra coverage in 1 hour. Of course, a 24hp tractor will cost more than a 15hp tractor --- but will be worth it.

Finally --- you need to consider any specific size requirements or limitations.

Does your tractor need to get through a narrow gate? Do you have a low garage?

Also, make sure that no matter what size tractor you buy, you have a trailer that is heavy enough to haul it.
