PTOs (Power Take-Offs) are dangerous because the shafts rotate at a high speed.
Here are some of the dangers of PTOs:
Entanglement: Most PTO accidents occur when people get too close to a rotating shaft. PTO shields cover the shaft to help prevent you from becoming entangled. Injuries that can be sustained from PTO incidents include severe contusion, cuts, spinal and neck injuries, dislocations, and broken bones.
Unsafe practices: Mounting, dismounting, reaching for control levers from the rear of the tractor, and stepping across the shaft instead of walking around the machinery are all unsafe practices that can lead to operator exposure to operating PTO shafts. An extra rider while PTO power machinery is operating is another exposure situation.
Fatalities: Although PTO entanglement incidents have decreased over time compared with other causes of farm fatalities, attention to PTO safety continues to be important. Pennsylvania statistics over a recent ten-year period records five fatalities showing that attention to PTO safety continues to be important.
Ineffectiveness of guards: Some older types of equipment may have a U-shaped tunnel-type guard, which is ineffective. It is important to make sure PTOs are shielded with an enclosing type guard.
Common injuries: PTO injuries are common on a farm and can be life-threatening. Injuries can include amputations, lacerations, fractures, and even death.
It is important to follow safety guidelines when working with PTOs to prevent accidents and injuries.
