Servicing batteries can be dangerous. It is important that you follow some very specific safety guidelines. This will help prevent injuries.
To prevent battery explosions:
Before performing any tractor battery service work, first disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
Connect the positive (+) battery terminal first after the service work.
Use extreme caution when handling batteries.
Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames far away from the battery.
Avoid placing any metal piece across the battery posts
Wear protective goggles and gloves.
Note that a battery can emit flammable/explosive gasses.
Administering first aid for skin that comes in contact with acid:
Avoid letting your skin touch the battery electrolyte.
Immediately flush the skin with plenty of water.
Immediately seek medical attention.
To prevent acid burns:
Beware: The battery electrolyte contains sulfuric acid that is poisonous and can cause serious burns.
Fill batteries with electrolyte in a well-ventilated area.
Avoid inhaling fumes during filling or recharging the battery.
Wear protective goggles and gloves.
Administering first-aid for when acid is swallowed:
Drink a large amount of milk to neutralize the acid.
Immediately seek medical attention.
Administering first-aid for eyes that come in contact with acid:
Immediately flush eyes with running water for 15-30 minutes.
Immediately seek medical attention.
