Getting ready for spring is one of the most important tasks for a farmer. If you’re also a proud tractor owner, there are a few things you can do to prepare.
While many of these steps relate to routine maintenance, it’s still a good idea to brush up on these skills so you don’t experience any unwanted surprises.
Visual Inspection
The best way to uncover an issue that needs to be repaired is with a thorough visual inspection. As you know, your tractor has several moving parts, so you don’t want to wait for a major malfunction to learn that something is wrong. You’ll want to check for leaks, loose hoses, improper alignment, misplaced cables, and so on.
Fuel
Your machine should always have a fresh batch of fuel. Most of the time, you’ll be running your tractor regularly, so there shouldn’t be an issue. However, if you’re putting it in storage for a few weeks, add a fuel stabilizer to prevent water collection and fuel separation. This will also prevent rusting and corrosion.
Tires
Remember to check the tires. Your tractor tires are just as important as any other tire. After all, they’re the foundation of your machine. Confirm the tires are in good condition. There should not be any major damage or excessive wear. This tip is especially important if you’re pulling your tractor out of storage after a while. Refer to your owner’s manual for the manufacturer’s recommended psi level and make sure the tires are inflated accordingly.
Engine
The next tip to prep your tractor is to check the engine. This can get complicated, so if you don’t feel comfortable working on the engine, be sure to seek professional assistance. The good news is there is a lot you can do safely and comfortably at home.
For starters, check the engine fluids to see if they need to be topped off or replaced. The oil should be checked regularly with a dipstick. If it’s dark, discolored, or sludgy, you should replace the oil and the oil filter. Otherwise, top off as needed. If your tractor is burning through coolant too quickly, there might be a leak.
