My Tractor Pops Out of Gear

If your tractor pops out of gear, it is likely due to any of the following.

DAMAGED DETENT BALL OR SPRING

When you shift normally, you can feel gears snapping into place.

This is because a spring-loaded ball inside the shifter fork snaps into a dent in the shifter rail. When the detent ball wears down, or the spring gets weak --- the ball will not snap into the dent. Therefore, there is nothing locking the gear into place.

When this happens, you just need to replace the detent ball or springs.

This is NORMAL and cannot be prevented.

BEVELED GEARS

This can happen if you are shifting while your tractor is moving.

Yanmar transmissions (save for Powershift models) are not synchronized.

The grinding you hear when you shift is the gears grinding each other’s teeth down until they no longer lock into place.

BENT SHIFTER FORK

This typically happens when the shifter is pushed too hard and the fork gets bent.

If the fork is bent, it may not move the gear far enough to allow it to snap into the detent position.

When this happens, there is nothing to hold it in gear and it pops back out.

The only way to fix this is to try straightening out the fork or replacing it.
